Dawn of War 2

Not really Warhammer Online, but a few of us are taking some time out from thumbing our noses at the hated forces of Order (hiss boo etc) to get our butts kicked in this RTS today.

I’m looking forward to some mayhem… and losing badly to some fellow guildmates and friends. My bonus wargear activation code arrived last night in email and the box should arrive in the morning post. Between this and Sins of a Solar Empire: Entrenchment which goes live in 5 days thats a lot of competition for gaming time. We need to move the Earth into a further orbit so we can have longer days. Or something.

Talking of WH40K, I’d love to see a WH40K mmo but it would be hard to stop every player and their dog playing Space Wolves. One thing that separates the Warhammer multiverse from most other franchises is a very strong flavour and distinctive feel. Maybe it could be the first decent sci fi MMO *braces for frothing Eve fans to throw large objects*

Walk softly. And carry a big gun.

Booya! Been playing DoW2 all day now… hardly even notice my hangover!

    Too… many… games… to… play…

Mine arrived this morning, only just installing it now.

My copy of DoW 2 arrived this morning from play.com… with no disc in it. I have to sort out a return then a replacement. It looks like my DoW2 fun is delayed somewhat.

Got my hands on a disc. Installed it but not had much chance to play due to working right through the weekend. Worst installation routine I’ve seen since DOS based games, a real pig. Look at it this way: VMware ESX is easier to install than this badly created deployment package.

Having to register for two separate online services JUST TO INSTALL THE BLOODY THING is taking the piss, rather.

Hehe there’s a third code to enter if you have the wargear bonus stuff. So thats one to install the game, one for Windows Live, and another for Windows Live Marketplace if you have a pre-order copy.

The game was available cracked 3 days before the official release, making a mockery of this security. All it does is annoy people that bought it legitimately and those that got pirate copies can just play without any hassle. I’m not sure thats the kind of message that game companies should really be sending to customers.

It’s like those intro’s on DVD’s that you can’t skip through that compare copying a movie to stealing a car.

If anything this encourages me to download stuff.

DoW2 is worth every penny I spent on it though. Fantastic game that really manages to capture the 40k feeling, much more than DoW1!

Finally got some proper play time in after all the install and startup hassles.

Aye, this is a really good game. The odd things is… it reminded me of Icewind Dale. They seem to have crossed the best elements of streamlined RPG style combat with cut-down RTS.

They got the ‘feel’ right. The music (as far as I’ve played) fits it really well. I can see why some won’t like it – if they were hoping for more of the same that was in DoW 1, it isn’t there. All the ‘bloat’ has been stripped away. I’m impressed with the way your squads seek out cover rather than just standing in the open and getting pasted.

In at least the initial few missions the gradually expanding storyline is really well done.

Dreading playing this against friends – they’ve been practicing while I’ve been stuck in work this weekend 😀
