chat scroll limits

I’m not sure if anyone else gets supremely riled by this bug but it’s probably my biggest bugbear with WAR at the moment..

The Chat line limit doesn’t save… it defaults to 500 – you can set it in your user settings to 2000 or unlimited (the latter being the useful setting which allows you to read chat from more than 5 seconds ago when in combat) but the next time you login it’s back to 500.

The problem appears to be that when the system saves your settings it just doesn’t update the <Chat> element rather than it always saving the default one.

However it can be worked around, thankfully.

Disclaimer: This is messing with your settings XML files, if you screw up you’ll be in trouble, don’t do this if you’re not sure of what you’re doing.

First, log out of the game if you’re already in, then open up windows explorer and navigate to your WAR game directory. Inside the user folder there is a file called ‘UserSettings.xml’. Make a copy of this now incase you get something wrong. Then open up UserSettings.xml in your favourite text editor (e.g.  emacs, vi, textmate, eclipse, what do you mean you only have notepad? oh well it’ll do). Don’t open it in your web browser, that won’t help.

Search (ctrl-f in notepad) for scroll_limit and you should see something like:

    <Chat fade="true" profanityFilter="false" visible_time="60.00" scroll_limit="500" />

You want to change that 500 next to scroll limit to 2000 or for unlimited scrolling change it to -1 (minus one). i.e.

    <Chat fade="true" profanityFilter="false" visible_time="60.00" scroll_limit="-1" />

Save and login – you should now have unlimited chat log length.

    Shiny, that may be useful for me when I’m organising stuff and need to refer back quite far.

    Thank you for this blog entry. I knew where to go to change my chat file settings, but did not know the code for “unlimited” is “-1”.

    Awesome! Now I know and don’t have to be bothered with re-entering my settings every time I want to be able to scroll through combat logs in game. Such simple fixes, which make me wonder, “Why is it the community, and not the company, that have to invent them and post them?”

    +1 and a bravo for you. A true “-1” for Mythic. 🙂

    It’s a coder thing – if you have something that’s a limit, you store it as a positive number – unlimited is usually 0 or -1.

    I tried 0, it stopped me receiving any chat whatsoever 😉 -1 did the trick though.
